  • OverDrive Read is a browser-based eBook reader that works on most computers, tablets, and mobile devices running up-to-date web browsers. OverDrive Read is available for most eBooks from your digital library.

    How to use OverDrive Read

Once you borrow a book, click or tap the Read button on your Checkouts page.

    OverDrive Read button
    Notes, highlights, and other features

OverDrive Read lets you add bookmarks, search for terms, add notes and highlights, look up word definitions, change the font size and style, and more.

As long as you have an active internet connection, you can return to the eBook at any time during your loan and your place, bookmarks, notes, and highlights will be saved.

After the eBook expires, you can see any notes and highlights you made by selecting the Notes & highlights link next to that eBook on your History & notes page (under your Account).

    Read offline

Once you’ve opened an OverDrive Read eBook, you can cache (save) it in your browser so you can read it offline (without an internet connection).

Note: Some eBooks (especially those with a lot of pictures) can be too large to completely cache in your browser. In those cases, you’ll only be able to save a portion of the book for offline reading. Narration for read-along eBooks always requires an internet connection.

  • OverDrive Read provides simple access to eBooks for students.

Schools with one device per student

If your school is one-to-one or has a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy, students can use OverDrive Read to start reading eBooks right away on their own devices, without the need to install software or apps.

    Schools where students share devices

If your school has a computer lab or shared devices, OverDrive Read provides a digital reading option that doesn’t require Adobe IDs, registrations, or device resetting. Because no software is required, there’s no limit to the number of students who can share one computer or device. Students simply sign into your digital library, borrow eBooks, and click Read to begin reading.

    Multi-device support

As long as you have an active internet connection, your place in an OverDrive Read eBook will be saved between reading sessions. This means that a student can start reading on a school device and then continue at home on a personal device. OverDrive Read is compatible with most computers, tablets, and mobile devices running up-to-date web browsers.

    Notes and highlights

OverDrive Read has many of the features of popular reading apps, including the ability to make notes and highlights. These notes and highlights are saved for each title, so students can see and add to them each time they check out and open the same eBook in OverDrive Read.

Students can also access the notes and highlights directly from your school’s OverDrive website, even if they don’t have the title checked out any more. After logging in, the student can go to their History & notes page and select the Notes & highlights link next to an eBook. They’ll be able to see highlighted passages, notes they wrote, and the colors of their highlights.

Using OverDrive Read in the classroom

Since OverDrive Read is browser-based, it saves valuable class time by having students read directly in their browser with one click—no activation or registration needed.

OverDrive Read also allows you to quickly pull up titles on overheads and SMART Boards (to review parts of speech or sentence structure, for example).

    Easy setup

Unlike other eBook formats, OverDrive Read doesn’t require downloads, activation, or registration. All you need to open an OverDrive Read eBook is a computer or mobile device with an internet connection and an up-to-date browser. Once you’ve opened an OverDrive Read eBook, you can cache (download) it so you can also read it offline.

Note: Some eBooks (especially those with a lot of pictures) can be too large to completely cache in your browser. In those cases, you’ll only be able to save a portion of the book for offline reading. Narration for read-along eBooks always requires an internet connection.
